Partners in Health Engage at Berkeley
Our Mission Statement
Partners In Health Engage @ Berkeley firmly believes that every human has the right to quality health care. We actively engage with the global community through fundraising, educating, and advocating to end healthcare disparities internationally. We form long-lasting relationships with Members of Congress, encourage discourse surrounding complex public health issues created by systemic inequities, and raise money to build sustainable teaching hospitals and fund high-quality health care for people living in poverty. PIHE @ Berkeley is currently advocating for the Paul Farmer Memorial Resolution, the Community Health Workforce, and Public Health infrastructure.
Community

Our chapter aims to reshape the ideology that health inequity is a distant issue as, in reality, it's sitting with us all! While it's essential to recognize that globally, health care tends to be inadequate, unsustainable, inaccessible, and low-income to impoverished people experience the brunt of this. Our chapter's members must be reflective of these systems' impacts on our communities to understand how health injustice impacts our lives, even when it isn't evident—in all, bringing a more complex understanding of systemic healthcare inequality and strengthening our commitments to our personal and global communities without contributing to voyeuristic, insensitive, and disengaged narratives of global health.

Solidarity
Our chapter is committed to recognizing our positionality as UC Berkeley students and utilizing it to create actionable change across the globe. We don't believe in being bystanders; we all must take part in attaining social justice through education, advocacy, and fundraising. As part of a greater community, we must always be in solidarity. Prioritizing empathy so that we feel interconnected while recognizing the limitations of our perceptions of other needs. So, in solidarity, we prioritize the community's sense of need above our impositions.

Equity
In championing health care justice, we must also understand that there is no cookie-cutter solution to attaining sustainable quality care throughout global communities. Therefore, we emphasize "equity" over "equality" to ensure that the legislation and community projects our chapter advocates for align with the needs of the communities, including our own, that we're supporting.
